David Harold Ewing Sr. (1915-2003)

WAYNE, Neb.—David H. Ewing Sr., 88, of Wayne died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at his residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Plumer Settlement, Mills County, Oak Township in rural Glenwood, Iowa. Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. at Schumacher-Hasemann Funeral Home in Wayne.

David Harold Ewing was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Hartington, Neb., to Laura (Buckendorf) Ewing and David Earl Ewing. Upon graduation from Hartington High School in 1933, he went to work for the local Federal Land Bank office. In 1935, at the age of 20, he moved to St. Louis, Mo., to work for General American Life Insurance Company, where he was promoted to farm manaager. He later quit his job to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, where he served as a radio repairman. He held the rank of staff sergeant in tank battalions of 3rd, 4th and 5th Divisions, and he saw combat action in the Pacific on Iwo Jima. He was one of only two survivors of his platoon on Iwo Jima and witnessed the widely publicized flag-raising on Mount Suribachi.

On Feb 6, 1943, he married Marie Plumer of Glenwood, Iowa, in San Diego, Calif. After World War II, they moved to Omaha, where he sold real esate for the RC Hill Company, which later became the NP Dodge Company. In 1948, they moved to Wayne. He founded the Midwest Land Company in 1957. He was a respected businessman, civic leader, real estate broker, farm manager and appraiser for more than 50 years. He enjoyed working in the business with his wife, Marie, son, David Ewing Jr., and son-in-law, Marion Arneson, and continued to work full time or part time until recently.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, a son, David Ewing Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Donna; a daughter and her husband, Patricia and Marion Arneson; five grandchildren, Lisa Ewing of Omaha, Mary Ewing Osborn and Brent of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Kristin Ewing of Lincoln, Neb., Erin Arneson of Manhattan, Kan., and Alex David Arneson of Wayne; a brother, Edgar Ewing of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Edna Plumer of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Caroline Plumer of Glenwood, Iowa; and nieces and nephews, Mary Plumer of Omaha, Sharon Rouse of Denver, Colo., John Nevin of St. Louis, Mo., Katherine Winfield of Treynor, Iowa, Marian Hartje of Laguna Beach, Calif., Ray Parker of Mount Zion, Ill., and Annette Burr of Blacksburg, Va.
