Sheldon H. Williams

GLENWOOD — Sheldon H. Williams, 73, of Silver City was released from his long battle with cancer on Sept. 18 in Glenwood.

He was born Nov. 23, 1930 to Harold G. and Gertrude Julia (Plumer) Williams in Oakland.

Sheldon was raised on the farm where he presently resided. After graduation from Silver City High School in 1949, he enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He faithfully served his country during this time while achieving the rank of Master Sergeant and specializing in jet aircraft maintenance. Sheldon was honorably discharged in 1954 after four years of service.

After Sheldon returned home from active military duty, he resumed farming with his father and later he met and married Delores Jean Roenfeld of Mineola on May 4, 1960. To this union three children were born: Roger, Nancy and Kevin. The family was raised on the farm near Silver City where they were active with the farm and livestock operations.

Sheldon was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Mineola; 50 year member of the American Legion Gordon May Post No. 439 of Silver City, and faithfully served on the Glenwood Community School Board of Education for 15 years. He also provided leadership to the Ingraham Straight Shooters 4-H Club as a club leader and as a member of the Mills County 4-H Youth Committee. Sheldon continued to farm the land he grew up on until his health no longer allowed him to do so.

His father, Harold, preceded him in 1997. Sheldon is survived by his wife Delores Williams of Silver City; children: Roger and wife, Georganne Williams and son, Taylor Williams, of Glenwood; Nancy William of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Kevin Williams of Silver City; mother Gertrude Williams of Council Bluffs and a host of other relatives and friends.

Private graveside services were previously held. Sheldon's family requests your presence at a celebration of his life reception to be held at the Mineola Community Center, Mineola, on Sunday, Sept. 26, beginning at 4 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church, Plumer Settlement Cemetery, Silver City American Legion or Hospice Preferred Choice.
